Japanese manga once more inspires, educates, and reflects inner thoughts and imagery. Through the work of four distinguished artists, Ascaso Gallery creates a link between opposing worlds - the ‘high and low’, and presents the bond between ‘popularity and singularity’.
Takeru Amano, Javier Martin, Masako Miki, Noritoshi Mitsuuchi will explore the endless imagination of their inner child, bringing rich and vibrant colors to the blank white surface. Although the idea of each artist grows from the same root, it will flourish in a unique and diverse direction.
Takeru Amano creates a blend of both classicism and pop culture through the depiction of women from western art history in a Super-flat style, while Masako Miki brings, at first glance, humorous sculptures, whose aim is to mimic the folklore creatures found in Shintoism.
Javier Martin chooses to work with different forms of mediums - paint, printmaking, and strips of neon colors presenting the ‘Blindness’ portraits, inspired by the delusions of the mass culture. ‘Kawaiism’ colors the work of Noritoshi Mitsuuchi, bringing cartoon-like characters that resemble the ones found in children’s books, colorful and playful.
The Cute Tunes for Serious Sapiens exhibition is a retrospective of the artist's inner self. They seek to defend the individuality that is threatened by the mass culture and save the true, unique impulses in the world of art.

Revealing the self-presence through mark-making
Challenging, exploring, and indicating presence! Tariku Shiferaw strives to break the conventional ideas of painting and therefore make a mark in the existing society. The art, the act, and the form of thinking are all of political nature, an investigation of history, space, and structure.
By using the formal language of geometric abstraction to ‘mark the surface’, he conveys a new meaning onto the metaphysical space of painting. Geometric forms have had a variety of definitions and uses throughout history, edging into every religion, culture, and society. It is a shape adaptable to any form of existence. Tariku Shiferaw gives and assigns them a new meaning, marking oneself into the history and reclaiming space as an existing entity.
His art is an action, a way to investigate and oppose reality. “A mark, as physical and present as cave-markings, which says, “I am here” or “I was here”. It reveals the thinker behind the gesture - an evidence of prior markings of ideas and self onto the space.”
His recent series ‘One of These Black Boys’ explores the musical genres that have originated in Black Communities such as R&B, Blues, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae. By using horizontal gestures, dense layers of paint, and material, he strives to capture the pain and struggle presented through music.
It is a reference to the mid-century abstraction, enriched with the critical observation that leaves an unforgettable mark.

Finding synergy within the disparity
If the surface is different, the depths are alike. Indicating the universal relation, Library Street Collective opened a joint exhibition Asymmetry featuring the work of two prominent artists - Robert Moreland and Jacqueline Surdell. At first glance, radically different two new bodies of work create a synergy on a metaphysical level that transcends visual reality.

Finding synergy within the disparity
If the surface is different, the depths are alike. Indicating the universal relation, Library Street Collective opened a joint exhibition Asymmetry featuring the work of two prominent artists - Robert Moreland and Jacqueline Surdell. At first glance, radically different two new bodies of work create a synergy on a metaphysical level that transcends visual reality.
You will be captivated by Surdell’s textile ‘creations’ made through labor-intensive work. Based upon repetition, color, and shape, the artwork beholds an enchanting vibe that, for a moment, turns the gallery into a sacred space. The lines overlap with one another, and the colors unite - an amalgamation of color and line, connecting and disconnecting through a calming undulation.
The complexity of Surdell’s work opposes the simplicity of Moreland’s flattened canvases. Hand-made with metal tacks, and leather hinges, enriched with dense layers of color, the canvases are an example of a two-toned form that highlights the relation between color, shape, and line.
The artwork stands firmly against the white walls, creating a depth through contrast. Although visually different, the pieces are connected through the forms that perceivably disconnect them. They are conceived out of the same compound - colors, lines, and shapes, manually crafted into a piece of art. When viewed together you can hear the conceptually nuanced language that aligns them into one universal space.

Scheduled to open last year, Quiet as It's Kept finally found its way to the halls of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The 2022 Biennial is a blur of time and its happenings, a reality stretched, suspended, and contracted all at once.
Co-curators David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards have voiced the unpredictable political, health, and humanitarian changes, and created a catalogue of meticulously selected 63 artists and collectives in an urge to present the abstraction of it all. From the dark labyrinth of art to the clear, light-filled hall, we have a space of opposition emphasizing the polarity of the past and present society.
The presented artwork has a dynamic, elusive flow that will have you lost in the series of hunches, colors, lines, and shapes. A powerful abstraction that moves and changes across the walls gives us an invaluable insight into the present course of American contemporary art. Being both intergenerational and interdisciplinary, the Whitey Biennial 2022 proposes that cultural, aesthetic, and political possibility begins with meaningful exchange and reciprocity.

Wanting to make sense of the society of America, he draws inspiration from the existing forms and characters and places them into his own dreams - the surreal, immersive environments.
Fragments of popular and consumer culture, modern design, art history, and commercial advertisement alongside a personal narrative complete the hypnotic large-scale installations. Acting as Pink Panther, Eminem, Wicked Witch of the West..., Alex da Corte takes the characters out of the original context and creates a beautiful transition that radiates comedy, criticism, and a glimpse of confusion. With flashing neon lights and colorful carpets, he draws the audience into his world that could and does exist.
Reimagining the ‘known’, and carving the ‘new’ Alex da Corte is rising not only as an artist but as a showman whose work captivates you as a whole. Symbiosis of the body and the technology
Emerging from the anatomy of the biomorphic abstraction, Software brings light to the unique dynamics of internal biology. Using code as a starting point that evolves into an oil on canvas, Vickie Vainionpää indicates the unbreakable bond of the human-machine relationship.
Folding and twisting into organic-like forms, the work of Vainionpää can be seen as microorganisms, intestinal tangles, or even desktop screensaver. Software extracts the virtual from its digital world and binds it to reality, creating shapes that are elusive yet existing.
With the presence of coincidence etched into the code and paint, the exhibition brings us a glimpse into the hyper-reality that awaits the present world. Along with the vibrant, fleshy, and vivid series of paintings, Vickie Vainionpää features an immersive video piece covering the walls of the gallery. It brings a moody, nocturnal feel opposite to the optimism of the paintings.

Blending the musical and the spiritual
‘Are the spirits that move us all that different from who we are?’ Seeking to observe and expose the occult and intangible Brea’n Thompson creates unique visual expressions of Jane’s fluid nature. A ghost that dwells and occupies the mind, giving the artist an entrance into other dimensions.
Through synesthesia, she merges the senses such as sight and hearing, displaying ‘sound colors’ unique only to Jane. By using oil paintings Brea’n blurs the colors giving them a fluidity that moves with the sound. The swirling patterns and defining loops, along with the vibrant colors, depict Jane differently each time, yet preserving the solitary essence of her.
Her artistic process and creation are mostly experimental, leaving room for the unpredictable to emerge from the depths of the mystical. Jane’s facial structure, clothing, color, and texture have evolved over the years, giving her a personality of her own.
To give another layer of depth to her artwork Brea’n uses her background in geology to map out the terrain in which the ghost lives.
Her artistic work serves as a vessel through which spirituality and music blend and become one. It is a unique presentation of the surreal, that will transport you to another dimension that walks the line between uncanny valley and a spiritual oasis.
